Valentine's Mini Sessions

I am so excited to announce Valentine's Mini Sessions in Brigham City! You get 24 custom wallet Valentines and the option to add 2 mini accordion albums. These mini accordion albums make awesome brag books for grandparents and are the perfect gift.

These sessions are not just limited to children. You can bring all the kiddos or the whole family if you'd like! February 4 is THIS Saturday, and there are only 6 sessions available. Your order will be ready on February 10 for pickup.

Before/After

Here's a new before and after shot, as well as a brief description on how I edited it from start to finish.

This was taken behind on the north side of Loveland's Cycle in Brigham City, right on main street. Savannah is a beautiful girl and she made my job so easy. We started around 9:00 am and the light was fantastic.

I shot this with my 18-55 mm Nikkor len at f/5.3, ISO 400, and a shutter speed of 1/250. I made a few changes in the camera raw editor (mostly exposure and brightness), then opened it in Photoshop CS3. I brightened her eyes and erased a few blemishes. I ran MCP's Urban Revival action and adjusted the first layer to about 35% and the second to about 50%. I also ran MCP's Magic Skin action and adjusted it to about 25%. I finished by sharpening the image.

This post is rather off topic for me, but living debt free is something that I am passionate about. These are 100% my opinions and I am in no way being compensated for this post.

If you're like me, you've got a list a mile long of things that you'd like to do, places to go, and things to see. Two things usually stand in my way of checking these things off my bucket list. The first is time and the second is money.

A few months ago I was introduced to Karie Hill. She's a financial coach and she teaches women how to get financially fit. I've been a long time listener to Dave Ramsey, who is also a financial coach. They both encourage you to live debt free, but what I love about Karie is that she has a slightly different take on it. For example, read what she wrote about how to save money. She used four steps to save enough to quit her 9-5 job and do what she loves. I think my favorite part about her article is how she talks about saving not for an emergency, but for an opportunity "save for the opportunity to explore unemployment, the opportunity to pay medical bills that have healed your body". Doesn't that sound so much better than saving for an emergency?

If you're struggling with debt and can't make heads or tails of your money, do something about it today. There are some great free resources out there for you to take advantage of. Pick up one of Dave Ramsey's many books from the library (I recommend the Total Money Makeover) or sign up for Karie's newsletter.

Start doing something about it today. Right now. You can always say that you'll look into it tomorrow, but you'll forget or something else will get in the way.

Savannah totally rocked this shoot. She was phenomenal! She needed very little direction and was always changing up her poses and facial expressions--which means that we got a lot of fantastic material to work with. Christmas Day

We had a lovely Christmas. We spent Christmas Eve at my parents' house with all of my siblings except for Brad and Jess (who are in Ohio and who are sorely missed). Christmas day we came back to Brigham City. Our traditional progressive dinner was unfortunately canceled because multiple people from multiple families were sick, so we hung out with some of Paul's immediate family and we ate way too much food. After Max woke up from his nap, we went out to feed Paul's little herd of goats.

I seriously have the best family a girl could ask for. Aaaaand I have 18 goats. Who wouldn't want 18 goats?!

I love the holidays. I'm so grateful for my amazing family and for Paul who supports me in all of my crazy ideas. I'm grateful we have a place to call home and vehicles that work (even if they aren't the most stylish vehicles). I'm missing my family that is far away this year...I keep expecting Brad and Jess to walk through the door. Our other Brad is in Guatemala, with one more year left to go.

I have learned so much over the past three months from the amazing and talented Kristen Kalp and from Sarah Petty. I've never offered prints or canvases before, but that changes starting today! I can't wait to show you what else I have up my sleeve. I hope you have the best long weekend ever, and hopefully we'll be in touch soon. :)

WHCC is one of my favorite labs, and they have partnered with The Joy of Marketing to present "Newbie Basic Training" for photographers that have been in business less than five years. I can't believe I didn't think to share this until now! It is free to listen to and you have the opportunity to purchase the audio recordings, notes, and slides if you miss a day or just want to have them. Me, I'm just listening and scribbling notes as I go. I have absolutely loved the information so far--it has been SO helpful. If you are a newbie photographer (or feel like you never established the foundation that you think you should have), go check it out.

No Reason NOT to Shoot

Life has changed for me since I've had Max. Before, I would carry my DSLR with me almost everywhere. Now I'm lucky if I can remember my phone and the diaper bag...my Nikon is usually out of the picture. Ha. Out of the picture. I digress.

I also have a Canon point and shoot camera. I'm guaranteed to have at least 1 out of my 3 cameras on me, that 1 most likely being the camera on my phone (which is more on the terrible side...time to upgrade, I think). I'd rather whip that bad boy out and capture (albeit a grainy) picture or video of that-really-amazing-thing-that-I-just-know-I'll-kick-myself-if-I-don't-capture, than to completely miss the shot.

What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't matter what kind of camera you have. Pull it out and start shooting. Hopefully what you have is better than my 2 year old camera on my phone, but you don't need to drop $900 (or more) for a fancy DSLR. Shoot with what you have. Did you know you can actually change the ISO, exposure, and other stuff on a point and shoot? Pull out your user manual for a little light reading (but for heaven's sake, skip the whole part about the battery changing. We're not looking for a nap, here). It isn't the camera that makes the pictures, it is the photographer behind it.

What? You already have a fancy DSLR? Ride on. Learn how to use it--and by use it, I mean learn how to take pictures on anything but auto.

Here's a cool shoot where they didn't use an expensive camera. They just used an iPhone.

Ok. So they had some fancy lighting equipment, a professional model, make up artists, etc. Here's another video where they do a shoot with even less equipment. Check it out:

Become good with what you have. Go shoot something. :)

I have known Melissa for what feels like forever. I think in my mind she will forever be 8 years old...but as evidenced from these pictures, she has grown up and gotten married. She is gorgeous and so fun. She and her husband Kellen are such an adorable couple, and despite the heat, we had a blast and got some fantastic pictures.

What an amazing family! I was so impressed with these guys--they did whatever I told them to do, with absolutely no qualms about it! The kiddos are absolutely hilarious and they were troopers even though it felt like a billion degrees outside. We ended the session on a cool note at Baskin Robbins. We got this shoot in right before the cold weather hit, which is great because we still got some great fall color. We got together at Wheeler Farm, and of course, we pick the last day of the pumpkin patch/hayride/corn maze. That combined with the other families and photographers out to capture the color made for a crazy time, but all in all I had a blast.

We stopped in Richfield on our way back from Colorado after a summer sales adventure with Comcast. I loved this shoot. I think it shows what a family is really about. You may not always get everybody looking at the camera at the same time or maybe someone close their eyes right as the shot was taken, but I think it is shots like this that really show the personality of a loving group of people.

I've been a bit obsessed with lower case lettering, much to the chagrin of my mother-in-law (veteran preschool teacher). I just love it. Here's my most recent design. I added the beveled edge so you can see the difference between that and my white back ground.

*Any of my designs are customizable with font and colors. If there's something up here that isn't your favorite, but the design is, it is easily fixed to your liking.
